Brexpiprazole (Rexulti®)

Brexpiprazole (Rexulti®)

Brexpiprazole, marketed under the brand name Rexulti, is a medication used to treat certain mental health conditions. It belongs to a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics, which treat schizophrenia and major depressive disorder.

Brexpiprazole works by blocking the action of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. Doing so helps to reduce symptoms of psychosis and stabilize mood.

Brexpiprazole is available as oral tablets, once daily, with or without food. The dosage and form of medication prescribed will depend on the specific condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and the individual's response to the medication.

Common side effects of Brexpiprazole include restlessness, weight gain, drowsiness, and tremors. It may also cause increased blood sugar levels and an increased risk of developing diabetes. Rarely, it may cause a serious condition called a neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

Brexpiprazole may interact with other medications, so informing healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins is important. It may also increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in some individuals, especially young adults, and teenagers, so close monitoring is required during treatment.

Overall, Brexpiprazole is a commonly prescribed medication for certain mental health conditions, and it is effective in reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life for many people. However, working closely with a healthcare provider to monitor for any potential side effects or interactions is important.
