Buprenorphine (extended-release injectable for example Sublocade®)

Buprenorphine (extended-release injectable for example Sublocade®)

Buprenorphine is a medication used to treat opioid addiction and dependence. It is available in several forms, including tablets, sublingual films, and extended-release injectable formulations such as Sublocade.

Sublocade® is an extended-release injectable form of buprenorphine administered monthly by a healthcare provider. It works by binding to the same receptors in the brain as opioids, helping to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the same euphoric effects.

Sublocade® is only available through a restricted program called the Sublocade® REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) program, requiring healthcare providers to undergo special training before prescribing it. Patients must also meet certain criteria before they can receive treatment with Sublocade®.

Common side effects of buprenorphine include constipation, nausea, headache, and sweating. It may also cause drowsiness or dizziness, so individuals should not drive or operate heavy machinery until they know how the medication affects them. Sublocade® may cause injection site reactions, including pain, swelling, and itching.

It is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins, as buprenorphine may interact with other medications. Additionally, buprenorphine can cause physical dependence, so it should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare provider and should not be stopped abruptly.

Overall, buprenorphine, including Sublocade®, is an effective medication for treating opioid addiction and dependence. However, working closely with a healthcare provider and following the treatment plan carefully to achieve the best outcomes is important.
