Chlorpromazine (Thorazine®)

Chlorpromazine, sold under the brand name Thorazine®, is a medication used to treat various mental health conditions, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe behavioral problems. It is a medication called phenothiazine, which blocks the effects of dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain.

Thorazine® is available in tablet, liquid, and injection forms, and the dosage may vary depending on the individual's condition, age, weight, and other factors. It is typically taken two to four times a day with food.

Common side effects of chlorpromazine include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. It may also cause more serious side effects such as muscle stiffness, tremors, seizures, and changes in heart rhythm. Additionally, chlorpromazine may increase the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes involuntary movements of the face and other body parts.

Chlorpromazine may interact with other medications, so informing healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins is important. Additionally, chlorpromazine should be used cautiously in individuals with a history of heart disease, liver disease, or seizures.
