Disulfiram (Antabuse®)

Disulfiram (Antabuse®)

Disulfiram, sold under Antabuse®, is a medication used to treat alcohol dependence by causing unpleasant symptoms when alcohol is consumed. It works by inhibiting an enzyme that helps metabolize alcohol, leading to a buildup of acetaldehyde, a toxic substance that causes unpleasant symptoms.

Antabuse® is available in tablet form and is typically taken once a day in the morning. The medication should not be taken until at least 12 hours after the last consumption of alcohol. It is important to note that the effects of Antabuse® can last for up to two weeks after the medication is stopped, so individuals must be cautious about consuming alcohol during this time.

Common side effects of Antabuse® include headache, drowsiness, acne, and a metallic taste in the mouth. However, the most significant side effect is the unpleasant reaction when alcohol is consumed, including flushing, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing.

Because of the potential for serious interactions with alcohol, it is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins being taken. Additionally, Antabuse® should be used cautiously in individuals with liver or kidney disease and should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.

Antabuse® is an effective medication for treating alcohol dependence by creating an unpleasant reaction to alcohol consumption. However, it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider and with careful monitoring of potential side effects.
