Medications for HIV treatment

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the standard treatment for HIV infection. ART is a combination of medications that target different stages of the HIV life cycle to prevent the virus from replicating and damaging the immune system. There are several classes of ART drugs, including:

Nucleoside reverses transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs): These drugs block the reverse transcriptase enzyme HIV uses to convert its RNA into DNA. Examples of NRTIs include zidovudine, tenofovir, and abacavir.

Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs): These drugs bind to a specific site on the reverse transcriptase enzyme to inhibit its activity. Examples of NNRTIs include efavirenz, rilpivirine, and nevirapine.

Protease inhibitors (PIs): These drugs block the protease enzyme, which HIV uses to process new viral particles before they can infect other cells. Examples of PIs include lopinavir, ritonavir, and darunavir.

Integrase inhibitors: These drugs block the integrase enzyme, which HIV uses to insert its genetic material into the DNA of host cells. Examples of integrase inhibitors include raltegravir, dolutegravir, and elvitegravir.

Entry inhibitors: These drugs block HIV from entering host cells by targeting the viral envelope or cellular receptors. Examples of entry inhibitors include maraviroc and enfuvirtide.

Pharmacokinetic enhancers: These drugs enhance the efficacy of other ART medications by increasing their levels in the bloodstream. Examples of pharmacokinetic enhancers include ritonavir and cobicistat.

ART is typically prescribed as a combination of three or more drugs from different classes to maximize its effectiveness and reduce the risk of drug resistance. The choice of medications and dosage depends on the individual's viral load, CD4 count, and potential drug interactions or side effects. It is important to take ART medications consistently and as prescribed to maintain viral suppression and prevent the progression of HIV infection to AIDS.
