Pimozide (OrapĀ®)

Pimozide (OrapĀ®)

Pimozide, sold under the brand name OrapĀ®, is a medication used to treat certain mental or mood disorders, including Tourette's syndrome and schizophrenia. It is also used off-label to treat other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Pimozide works by blocking certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine, which can reduce symptoms of the conditions it treats. It is available in tablet form and is typically taken once or twice a day, depending on the individual's response to the medication and other factors such as age, weight, and other medical conditions.

Common side effects of pimozide include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and constipation. It may also cause more serious side effects, such as movement disorders, including tardive dyskinesia, and a rare but serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Because of the risk of serious side effects, individuals taking pimozide must have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor their response to the medication and to check for any potential side effects. Additionally, pimozide may interact with other medications, so informing healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins is important.

Pimozide should not be taken by individuals with certain medical conditions, such as heart problems, as it may worsen these conditions. It should also be used cautiously in elderly individuals, as they may be more susceptible to certain side effects.

Pimozide is an effective medication for treating certain mental or mood disorders, including Tourette's syndrome and schizophrenia. However, it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider and with careful monitoring of potential side effects.
