Quetiapine (Seroquel®)

Quetiapine (Seroquel®)

Quetiapine, sold under the brand name Seroquel®, is a medication used to treat certain mental or mood disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also sometimes used off-label to treat anxiety disorders and depression.

Quetiapine blocks certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. It is available in tablet and extended-release tablet forms and is typically taken once or twice a day with or without food. A healthcare provider may adjust the dosage based on the individual's response to the medication and other factors such as age, weight, and other medical conditions.

Common side effects of quetiapine include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and constipation. It may also cause more serious side effects, such as movement disorders, including tardive dyskinesia, and a rare but serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Because of the risk of serious side effects, individuals taking quetiapine must have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor their response to the medication and to check for any potential side effects. Additionally, quetiapine may interact with other medications, so it is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications, supplements, and vitamins.

There is also a risk of developing diabetes or worsening pre-existing diabetes while taking quetiapine. Therefore, individuals taking quetiapine must have regular monitoring of blood glucose levels.

Quetiapine is an effective medication for treating certain mental or mood disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider and with careful monitoring of potential side effects.
