Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy ECT

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment used in mental health facilities for severe mental health conditions such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia that have not responded to other treatments. ECT involves passing electrical currents through the brain to induce a brief seizure to produce therapeutic effects.

During an ECT session, the individual is given general anesthesia and a muscle relaxant to reduce discomfort and minimize the risk of injury during the seizure. Electrodes are then attached to the scalp, and a brief electrical current is passed through the brain, triggering a seizure that lasts for a few seconds. The entire procedure usually lasts 10-15 minutes.

ECT is typically administered in a mental health facility on an outpatient or inpatient basis. The treatment is usually given in a series of sessions over several weeks. The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual's condition and response to treatment.

While ECT effectively treats certain mental health conditions, it also carries risks and side effects. These may include short-term memory loss, confusion, headache, nausea, and muscle soreness. In a mental health facility, trained medical professionals closely monitor individuals receiving ECT to ensure their safety and well-being.
