Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach used in mental health facilities to help individuals explore and resolve ambivalence about making behavior changes. It is often used in addiction treatment but can be used in various other settings.

The goal of MI is to help individuals identify and resolve the barriers that prevent them from making positive changes in their lives. This is accomplished through a collaborative and non-confrontational approach emphasizing empathy, acceptance, and support.

MI typically involves a series of structured conversations between the individual and their treatment provider. The provider uses specific techniques to elicit the individual's motivations and goals for change. The provider then works with the individual to develop a plan of action consistent with their values and priorities.

Some techniques used in MI include open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and summarizing. These techniques are designed to help the individual explore their thoughts and feelings about their behavior and to help them find the motivation they need to make positive changes.

Research has shown that MI can effectively address a wide range of behavioral issues, including addiction, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. It is often combined with other therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or 12-step facilitation, to provide a comprehensive treatment approach.
