Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is a relatively new therapy that is becoming increasingly popular in mental health facilities to treat depression, anxiety, and other conditions.

During a TMS session, a coil is placed on the scalp, and a magnetic field is generated, stimulating nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls mood. The procedure is painless and typically lasts between 20 and 60 minutes. Most patients require several sessions over several weeks to significantly improve their symptoms.

TMS is thought to work by changing neurotransmitters in the brain, which can help alleviate symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions. It is generally considered safe, although some patients may experience mild side effects such as headache, scalp discomfort, or tingling sensations.

TMS is often used with other types of therapy, such as medication or talk therapy, to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for individuals with mental health conditions. It is important to note that TMS is not appropriate for everyone and should be used only under the guidance of a trained healthcare professional.
